Buying guide: choosing your electric bike

The points that really matter before you buy, explained simply.

1. Mid-drive or hub motor

A mid-drive pushes the chain and uses the gears: it climbs better and handles loads. A hub motor sits in the wheel: simpler, cheaper, great on the flat. Examples: Bakcou Mule SD, Bakcou Flatlander SD.

2. The battery: think in Wh

Wh = volts × amp-hours. A 52 V, 20 Ah battery gives about 1,040 Wh. All else equal, more Wh means more miles.

3. Advertised and real range

Advertised range is measured in good conditions. Cold, snow, hills, wind, carried weight and a high assist level reduce it, sometimes by half.

4. Tires, brakes and sensor

Wide tires for snow and sand, hydraulic disc brakes for safe stops under load. A torque sensor gives natural assistance; a cadence sensor reacts to pedaling, more abrupt but simple.

5. Weight and load

An electric bike is heavy: check the maximum load, whether you can lift it when needed and where you will store or transport it.
